Reliability and Validity of Beck Depression Inventory-II for Diagnosing Depression

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric condition characterized by depressed mood or loss of interest in daily life activities. The Ministry of Health and Welfare of South Korea reported that approximately 5.0% of the population suffers from MDD, while the World Health Organization estimated the global prevalence to be around 4.4%. In this context, the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) is a widely used depression assessment tool in Korea.

This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties and diagnostic utility of the Korean BDI-II by analyzing its reliability, validity, and cut-off points for diagnosing MDD and depressive-related disorders. A total of 1,145 clinical and non-clinical Korean adults participated in this study. The results showed that the BDI-II is a reliable and valid screening tool and severity rating tool in the Korean adult population.
